‘Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce’ Act Gains Co-Sponsors

April 27, 2023

Support continues to build in Congress for legislation that would expand 529 savings plans to cover postsecondary credentials, after ASAE made the bill the centerpiece of its annual legislative fly-in last month.

During American Associations Day March 27-28, nearly 100 association advocates from 18 states and the District of Columbia visited with more than 50 Congressional offices to build support for the bipartisan Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act (H.R. 1477 / S. 722). The legislation, championed by Reps. Rob Wittman (R-VA) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) in the House and Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Mike Braun (R-IN) in the Senate, would expand eligible uses of 529 education savings plan funds to cover costs associated with obtaining and maintaining legitimate, robust professional certification programs. The bill would provide workers options and flexibility to grow their careers and simultaneously open 529 tax advantages to a much larger group of people.

Since the ASAE fly-in, seven co-sponsors have signed on to H.R. 1477, including Reps. John James (R-MI), Jennifer McClellan (D-VA), Glenn Grothman (R-WI), Max Miller (R-OH), Burgess Owens (R-UT), Beth Van Duyne (R-TX) and Mike Carey (R-OH).

The ASAE Public Policy team thanks American Associations Day participants for their strong advocacy and encourages the community to follow their LinkedIn page for future activations on the issue.
