House GOP Issues Governing Framework

House Republicans last Friday released a framework for governing should the party flip the House in the upcoming November elections.

The framework includes few specific policy proposals but offers a glimpse of House Republicans’ priorities during the last two years of President Biden’s current administration. Dubbed the “Commitment to America,” the blueprint details broad-stroke plans to curb inflation, reduce crime and strengthen border security, along with ending liberal social policies.

“What the ‘Commitment’ is, it’s a plan for a new direction,” said House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who is poised to become speaker if Republicans win back the House this fall.

McCarthy also said the first bill Republicans would advance in the House next year would be to repeal funding for hiring more Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees. Democrats included additional IRS funding in the “Inflation Reduction Act” this summer to curtail high-end tax evasion.

In a speech to the National Education Association, President Biden referred to the Republican plan as a “thin series of policy goals with little or no detail” and urged support for Democrats in the midterm elections.

“In 46 days, Americans are going to face a choice,” Biden said. “We have a real alternative here.”
